Wow, that CUE is seriously screwed up, no wonder Alcohol rejects it. Do you have the "append to next track" option enabled in EAC?

Track quality < 100% just means that EAC had to do some error correction on one or more sectors. As long as it doesn't report read errors it's fine, don't worry about it.

There are cases where different pressings of the discs have completely different ring codes (e.g. Sanitarium PC), so you can never really be sure. Unless you require everyone to post photos of the games, of course, but that would be crazy. Not even the SPS guys go that far, and that's saying something.

I have four more PC-98 games waiting for me at the post office, I'll go pick them up tomorrow. This time they're all ports of PC games: Doom, TFX, The Horde and Alone in the Dark 2.

I used ddump for my MDK2 dump and it seems to work well. If there's a way of getting the actual data of the sectors I've been unable to find it.

bin/cue doesn't support this, just like CD Extra.

CD Extra is multisession, that's why the BIN/CUE format can't be used with it. In this case we are dealing with only one session with multiple data tracks inside, and that's fully supported by the CUE format.

I think "illegal TOC" is being used incorrectly here; long ago, some people started using that term to refer to discs with more than one data track, but that's actually within the standards, and the BIN/CUE format should be more than enough to make a full dump (just like in the PC Engine games).

Well, at least you can't blame me for not trying to help on the PC-98 side! tongue

The FM Towns is interesting too, of course. In fact I was thinking about buying a few of the not-so-expensive games; apparently they are just regular CDs with no protections or anything strange so they should be easy to dump.

IsoBuster defaults to .iso for single tracks and .bin for images of the entire disc, but you can change the extensions if you want: Options -> Image Files -> ISO/BIN/TAO

I could do a Spanish translation, but I agree with Feltzkrone in that we need an updated guide in English first.

My dumps were made with an LG drive and rawdump, so they should be good.

By the way, I think there's something wrong with the naming of the discs in the PC USA version of Final Fantasy VII. "Disc 1" is actually the install disc, and discs 2, 3 and 4 should be 1, 2 and 3, respectively.

There are exceptions, though... for example, here in Spain we got the French versions of the SNES Dragon Ball games, yet they are marked as (France) in the No-Intro dat. And I'm talking about official releases, not imports.

Now that we're on the topic of Japanese words... is it "mokushiroku" or "mokujiroku"? I've always seen the former, but someone (one of the mods, I suppose) changed this title and now I'm not so sure...

If you have a (real) Plextor drive you can use PerfectRip, it should detect the gap properly.

But aside from that, this is a real annoyance. Has anyone tried to contact Andre Wiethoff and tell him about this issue? Perhaps he'd be willing to fix it...

I have a list of contents for the games I bought new. It's just for my own reference, but if someone wants to integrate it into a bigger project I'm willing to share it.

More specifically you should use pSX, because ePSXe apparently ignores the region of the BIOS and the game always boots.

This reminds me that I should check my old PSX dumps for anti-mod protection...

In the PC there isn't a distinction between "official" and "unofficial" games like in the consoles, since you don't need a license to legally publish games... so I think every game that comes in an original pressed CD/DVD should be allowed and treated the same way.

Well, getting a drive that can overread into the leadout is definitely the easier solution, but not the only one. It's still possible to dump the last track correctly if you use a drive with a combined negative offset for that particular disc.

Now that we are talking about barcodes, there's one that has always baffled me: a letter and 11 numbers. Maybe it's some kind of obscure standard used only in Japan, but I've never seen anything like it.

You can use the "reMove" tool by themabus, it's even better because you get the removed part in a separate file, in case you want to check it. It's also better in that it works with 64-bit operating systems (resize doesn't). Get it here.

For example, to cut the last 150 sectors (352800 bytes) from a file called track01.bin:

remove -size=150sec track01.bin gap.bin

With that, track01.bin gets resized and gap.bin contains the removed part.

I'm trying to dump MDK2, a PC game with Laserlock protection (the one with the unreadable "ring" on the surface of the CD), but I can't seem to get any consistent result. I tried using DDump with the LASERLOCK option, but I get different images and logs with each drive. Does anyone know if there's a safe method for dumping these things?

Don't worry, the 162C is functionally identical to the 162D. But be warned that it's a DVD reader only. If you want to burn DVDs you'll need another drive.

I agree with Havikoro. Even if the naming convention changes, the dats are there for a reason. Anyone can download them and let CMP do its job.

And I'd like to add that, for PC games, the best group would probably be alt.binaries.old.games, as long as they are at least one year old.

Yeah, the patches and such are nice if you already have a file from some other source, but sometimes (especially for PC games, as they can have a lot of wildly different variants) it's better to just get a verified image. I have full Usenet access too, so I can upload my dumps and make some NFOs so people know where all this comes from.
