I've been trying to dump my Neverwinter Nights Deluxe Edition discs. Neverwinter Nights disc 3, Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark have SecuROM protection. My discs appear to be the same as those shown in these database entries (discs dumped by ghost, MD5s as in the database entries):

With this SecuROM protection, one sector near the end (outside) of the disc gives an L-EC error on reading. I tried with five different optical drives. Each drive gives consistent dumps; dumping multiple times in the same drive results in identical image files. Here for example are MD5s for dumps of my Hordes of the Underdark disc:

The GMA-4082N/GDR8082N images match those in the database. Both my matching-checksum drives are made by Hitachi-LG Data Storage.
But the Samsung, Lite-On and Freecom (which almost certainly uses a Lite-On mechanism) drive images are identical, but different from the Hitachi-LG drives' image.

So my questions/comments are:

  • Different makes/models of drive can return different, but consistent data for the bad sectors. That might increase the chance of people inadvertently submitting incorrect dump info.

  • Exactly what data is supposed to be in the image file for the bad/unreadable sector of SecuROM-protected discs?

  • Looking at the hex dumps below, note the different value in byte 15; 02 for the GMA-4082N/GDR8082N images, 01 for the Lite-On/Samsung.

  • After the first 16 bytes, the bad sector data in the Lite-On/Samsung image seems to be random (or maybe scrambled/encoded???). Whereas the bytes are all zero for the GMA-4082N dump.

  • If the GMA-4082N/GDR8082N dumps (which match the checksums in the database entry) are correct, people should beware of using Samsung or Lite-On drives for dumping these protected discs.

The difference between the two sets of image files (Lite-On/Samsung vs GMA-4082N/GDR8082N) is in the data for the bad/error sector 320800; the 2352 bytes at offset 754521600 in the image file. Here are hex dumps of that sector data.

That exactly sector should be of mode2 therefore [02], so following is correct

Thanks for that. Is it known whether the bad sector actually contains all zero bytes, or is it just that some drives return all-zero bytes for it?

A little update...

I just received a Lacie external USB DVD writer which has an NEC ND-3500AG drive inside. Using that to read the SecuROM-protected discs, no L-EC error is reported by the imaging progam, in fact the drive doesn't even slow down on reading the "bad" sector! (I'm using cdrdao on Linux.) The resulting image files match those in the database and my results with the Hitachi-LG drives.

I also tested the NEC drive with a Safedisc-protected disc (Euro 2000). While it did slow down a lot when reading though the bad sectors (typically in the region of 800-10000), the drive is noticeably quicker doing that than my other drives. It took under 1 second to read each bad sector. For some reason the drive seems to read through the bad sectors fastest when I set it to 8x speed.

So it seems NEC drives are an excellent choice for reading SecuROM and Safedisc-protected discs.

They aren't actually a bad sector with SecuROM , just an alternate mode sector. It's perfectly legal to do in the mastering process, it's just drives have pretty limited firmware most of the time and they expect every sector to be the same mode.

They are mode 2 sector without ecc/edc. Sectors can even have wrong header info, I have at least one disc with such.

SafeDisc are entirely different matter, we don't exactly know if what is read by drives (either plextor with d8, or other drive with audio trapdisc) is what is really on the sector or not. More testing needs to be done here with audio mode dumps to see if they match across drives or not.

Just because a drive can skip read errors, doesn't mean they are reading them properly. Also most tool just return made up data for them, usually filled with 00. For instance, CloneCD, Alcohol, ddump or other such dumping tool.

Have you tried to burn such images? Read the disc on Plextor, burn the disc on Plextor, then dump both original and copy on another drive, which output differs from Plextor. If you get identical images from both original and copy (but both different to PX ones), PX dumps are probably correct smile
