Re: [ADDED] Contra Legacy of War and Hot Shots Golf

Why has this dump been added? He didn't enable overreading so there might be samples missing at the end of track 12.

The dump is correct, it has been examined by DJoneK and verified......

How? Usually the only way to determine if there's data in these samples is to enable overreading. I don't mean to criticize anyone but I really wonder how he was able to verify the data yikes

Well, my drive has problems if I enable the option, it gives a sync error if the option is enabled, but I have verified several games without the option and it seems like the drive might automatically overead.....I may get another computer in the next 3 months, in which I promise to redump all my "blue" discs then to make sure......

Re: [ADDED] Contra Legacy of War and Hot Shots Golf

If you get a sync error your drive most likely can't overread. The samples are then filled with 00s. If you are able to match other dumps, they (coincidentally) also have 00s in these samples, either already on the original discs or because the original dumper's drive couldn't overread as well smile

It may seem overly picky but there are cases in which these samples contain data.

Re: [ADDED] Contra Legacy of War and Hot Shots Golf

Just look at http://www.daefeatures.co.uk/ for a cheap drive that is able to overread. :-)

I recommend a plextor drive, though. Ebay is a good source big_smile

Re: [ADDED] Contra Legacy of War and Hot Shots Golf

Also, a question/comment, even if someone posts a log with "Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out          : Yes" it doesn't mean their drive supports overreading, thus the dump could still be missing data?  Or is it confirmed that if there is data in the last sector eac will produce an error/warning if the drive doesn't support overreading and this option is checked?

For example

1. I have a GSA-4163B drive that eac's "Detect read sample offset correction" analyzis says "Lead-In Only" and my drive offset is positive, so it does not support overreading to my understanding.
2. I have a GCE-8520B drive that eac's "Detect read sample offset correction" analyzis says "Lead-In and Lead-Out", so it does support overreading to my understanding.

But the GSA drive produces the same .wav files as the GCE drive, even if the GSA drive has the "Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out" checked or unchecked.  There is no warning/errors in the log in either case.

I don't have a disc that I know that there is data in the end so I don't know if warnings/errors show up in the important case but wondering if seeing "Overread into Lead-In and Lead-Out          : Yes" in the log is enough to know there isn't data missing at the end?

Maybe the guide has to be updated to explicitly check if the drive supports overreading instead of just forcing people to check the option and assuming a warning/error will be produced?

Re: [ADDED] Contra Legacy of War and Hot Shots Golf

No, EAC doesn't necessarily produce an error. I tried numerous combinations of drives and discs with only very few giving me the sync error. Most of the drives just quietly filled the samples with 00s (if the option "Fill missing offset samples with silence was checked!). The good news is that the majority of discs doesn't have any data there at all, so those samples being 00 is correct.

In case of your GCE-8520B, NvrBst, assuming it really is capable of overreading, the overread samples do most likely already contain 00s on the disc, hence the 00s your GSA-4163B puts there automatically -- because it cannot access the actual data -- match.

We cannot be 100% sure if a drive was able to pick up these samples just based on someone's log. All we can do is check whether the drive he used is principally capable of overreading (on daefeatures, as Sotho Tal Ker suggested). It is safe to assume that if the overread option has been checked and the drive is known to support overreading no samples have been lost.

As I said, most discs don't have data in these samples so maybe 90% of times we'll be fine even with "unsupported" drives. In case of a mismatch in the last track, both dumps need to be compared. Anyway, to avoid such cases it's always a good idea to encourage people dumping discs with multiple tracks to check if their drive supports overreading.
