I think the whole problem is that we don't have an Edition (datfile) field..

And also we should specify how the version and edition should be used..

One can argue that e.g. 'Need for Speed: Special Edition' (an updated version with new tracks and cars) and Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Game of the Year Edition (updated version and extra maps) isn't the edition, but the version, because it's a new version of the game. But at the same time it's the game title on the box, so why shouldn't it be in the title field instead?

If you really want to be strict about what belongs in which field then maybe it's best if the version field gets only the version number (e.g. v1.31) or (in some cases) volume serial number, the edition (datfile) field as a solution gets the additional edition text of the title, but not between brackets at the end but as a subtitle of the original game title: add 'Special Edition' in the edition (datfile) and the filename becomes 'Title: Special Edition'. Then finally, the title field should only contain the original game title. This way all elements are in the correct fields, but the filename is still logical (with the complete title in its original context).

Well, it's in the edition field only because you said you wanted it there for sorting.. guess it should only be in the title then tongue (so now it's correct)

I don't see how the current naming is wrong.. I just didn't add 'Jewel Case' because it's pointless as far as I can see..

@BitLooter, are you sure some of these are Mode2?

So I should use:

Slam Tilt (Expert Software)
SimCity 2000: Special Edition (Original)

Why not SimCity 2000 (Special Edition)? I.e. "Special Edition" in "Edition" field? I don't think this game has "Special Edition" on the title screen...

There's not a single 'Special Edition' between brackets in any dat, so it's better if you first check such things before posting useless suggestions again tongue

Well, then it's with the ':' included tongue

I think the title should be 'SimCity 2000 Special Edition' with original edition, because it's clearly a different game and it's not just the packaging.. Wikipedia etc. also give it that name.

Just name SimCity original edition..

Yeah.. I agree.. if you remove Taikenban from the title, then I think we're all happy. I guess you can put Taikenban either in the normal Version field? and Demo in the version (datfile) field. Or you can put it in the Edition field and allow sorting (and also make F1ReB4LL happy).

About reaching F1ReB4LL: he's on IRC every day, and so are most of the other mods, so if you want to discuss anything then that's the best place.

gorelord4e and ir0b0t also don't like your change.. I've come to a point where I don't really care what happens with filenames anymore.. but I hope you can collaborate why it's a version and not an edition..

Because.. Rev is used when it's stamped on the actual chip.. we use the standard naming of v1.0 and v1.1.. that's also how gameshark sites etc. make the distinction.

What about all those psx discs with audio that you said you'd send to a UK dumper? wink

Anyway, welcome back

ps. we don't have no-intro "on board".. we're only using their naming convention

We can't go back to the old naming now.. several fields have changed. Some contents of the serial field have moved to the version field, etc... It's technically not possible, and it also doesn't make sense. Tosec and No-Intro also don't have 2 naming conventions. The only optional parameter that we have is the no-intro convention PLUS serials.

We were aware that this step wouldn't please everybody (but still substantially more people were in favor of the no-intro naming than the previous one). Rocknroms wanted to keep the old naming, as did some other people. My only advice to those people is that they should use their own custom naming (several people on here were already doing this, so they should be able to help you in that department).

LOL more "Region and language tags" postings tongue

Thanks to the great forum software that doesn't even allow the merging of topics.. and if you split posts it 'forgets' the other pages, even though you selected them mad

Please continue the discussion about the region and language tags in the general forum. Thanks

I think there are probably some examples of games that have their own unique PAL UK release (English-only, whereas the rest of Europe got Multi language versions).. e.g. the Call of Duty games for the PS2 and some PS1 games.. I'm not sure if it justifies a UK country tag though.

the gaps determine the individual track sizes..

at this point i wonder if this thread has any relevance at all. smile

Plus it allows you to import tracks from other games without having to split them up first.. and it also provides more insight in whether the tracks are dumped correctly (they can be compared to other regions etc).

This is not really the type of questions that we expect in these forums, but anyway.. The only reason I can think of is that the cd brand isn't compatible with the ps1.. is it a cdrw? coz I don't think it can read those.

He can't tongue I'm sure there will be some people now who will say that 'Midway presents:..' is the correct title, but personally I think the current one is better because it's on the box.

You're right..

But we would need to add a note in the comments anyway.

If it's just some sectors then this won't be necessary. I remember having the same problem with one or two discs in the past.. (of course I reported it to Lord Dremora back then tongue) maybe it's better to compare it against an image of the NTSC version though, just to be sure.

If fixing a track gives you the expected crc then there shouldn't be a problem adding it as a blue dump.

Yeah, fishing would be alright I guess smile if it's wrong we can just correct it.. but maybe there are other traces on the disc that could indicate the number?

I was thinking of DVD video preservation again and maybe we could start a topic on this to investigate it?

AFAIK the .mds format isn't used to store decryption keys.. it only stores basic info like the layer break sector etc.

So I guess the following things could be investigated:

- Find a feasible (and fast) way of making 1:1 dumps and keeping all the (error) sectors in place.
- Find out how CSS keys are stored in the lead-in and come up with a sensible way of storing them.
