I've noticed in the database that all the SOULCALIBUR games are recorded as Soulcalibur. I had thought it was SoulCalibur, as appears in most of the logos (I, II, IV, V and Broken Destiny). Though on inspection of the games I possess (II, IV and Broken Destiny) the spine of the box and all mention of the title throughout the manual uses SOULCALIBUR and to me this seems a more accurate record of how the title is intended to be represented.

All caps is not gonna happen unless the letters each have a meaning.. like LEGO for instance. With Soulcalibur it's just stylized.

Out of curiousity, what does each letter of LEGO stand for?

Online it says it is derived from a danish phrase "leg godt" meaning "play well", though, it surely isn't an acronym(aka each letter has a meaning). Out of curiosity why is LEGO all capitalized by our naming standards? (I haven't read the No-Intro doc for a while, I assumed it was some special rule for trademarks or "common" stylization, etc).

Maybe I picked a wrong example then.. or maybe it's the copyright name and people are using copyright names here lol

No-Intro? I thought MusicBrainz was the standard used for capitalization here

SoulCalibur or SoulCalibuR (since the R on the title screen is definitely capitalized similar to WipEout).

Soulcalibur is incorrect.

All letters in "soulcalibur" are capitalized if you take a look closer at it,
however they use different letter sizes, which is just logo stylization IMHO.

It's SoulCalibur, no need to imagine things.

While I agree that SoulCalibur is a very common stylization. Out of curiosity, how would write soulcalibur III?

Here is what the the logo (in-game logo/disc logo/box logo/etc):
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fr/c/c7/Soul_Calibur_III_logo.png

Is it "SoulcalibuR III"? *just being difficult hehe, don't really have any opinion*. Also just for added information, if you look at the license information, for any soulcalibur, (aka legal notice at bottom of disc) it always lists it as for example: "SOULCALIBUR®IV is a trademark of ...", in plain computer text-type (non-logo'ed).

Means absolutely nothing. http://pics.mobygames.com/images/covers … 920-01.jpg -- WALT DISNEY COMPANY, right? not Walt Disney?

What you're debating is how to properly format a Trademark, and the problem is that everyone's opinion is sort of right.

Trademarks generally come in two different formats: (1) Logo mark and (2) Word mark.

"SoulCalibur" and "SoulCalibuR" and "SoulcalibuR" are simply stylized uses of the word "SOULCALIBUR" that appear in the Logo, whereas the Word mark "SOULCALIBUR" is generally more clear cut as to how the copyright holder originally intended it to look in TEXT format.

However, Word marks can be misleading as well, since a Word mark that is registered secures all rights to use that word (regardless of the styling). In other words: "APPLE" and "Apple" and "apple" = the same Word mark, but they would yield three different logo marks.

So with that said...it's really a matter of looking to see how the copyright holder set it as and determine which style is the most accurate. Clear as mud, right? Hope that helps! smile

The official title written by the publisher or developer can be used as a
reference including related titles from other media (movie titles). Some titles
also have an unusual capitalization on purpose. In that case, capitalization
should be left as intended.

Nothing about trademarks (which are usually in uppercase and can't be used as a title). SoulCalibur is an unusual capitalization on purpose, since it's a fictional word constructed from 2 standalone words, clearly visible on the title screen. You can leave 3rd part as Soulcalibur, if you want, but 1, 2 and 4 are SoulCalibur.

Not sure if it means absolutely nothing hehe. In my opinion redump should catalog all title stylizations written on box/manual/etc. The dumper (or others) can input them if they wish (main titles being the only mandatory field). For example in this case it'd be:

Main Title: SoulCalibur III
Spindle Title: SOULCALIBUR®III
Box Logo Title: SᴏᴜʟᴄᴀʟɪʙᴜR®III
InGame Title: SᴏᴜʟᴄᴀʟɪʙᴜR®III
SFO Title: SOULCALIBUR III
Licence Title: SOULCALIBUR®III

"Main Title" being the No-Intro\common franchise name (aka what the world, like mobygames or wiki, write the game as). Also what is used by redump to generate filenames. Typically "Main Title" stylization is same across all games in the series, and, this would make everything on the HDD look nicer (bundled together and consistant).

The other titles would need to probably be specific per system (aka only PS3's have SFO Titles, TuboGraph 16 probably doesn't have licence titles based on screen shot you gave, etc. Maybe this is all too tedious/accurate for what redump wants to do smile. I'm sure it's possible to implement to lessen the tediousness though, something like a bunch of "Title: ____" fields with checkbox's afterwards so people could for example write each stylization once and just checkbox the boxes with that version of the title (aka above Spindle/License would be checkboxed on a line and InGame/SFO checkboxed on a line). Maybe even a checkbox to indicate if it is a "Logo Mark" or "Word Mark".

Just a thought, I'm sure it's been suggested before though.

Maybe thats true for other systems, but, at least for PS3 less than 20% are all caps (usually only if the logo title is all caps). If you don't believe me here is a sample list of the licence titles for some of my ps3 dumps: http://pastebin.com/Zw0PVyzx

Btw, found another good analogue in No-Intro - http://datomatic.no-intro.org/?page=sho … amp;n=0257 - http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l … creens.png

As for the "Soulcalibur" for part 3 vs. "SoulCalibur" for the rest, well, No-Intro has ActRaiser smile
