I was just able to read a few PSX ring codes by simply holding the disc under the room light (a normal 15W CFL) and holding a cheap $2 6-LED flashlight and shining it at an angle so the beam reflects; the numbers showing up in the blue reflection (refraction?) rather than directly under the light.
